Making a Career & Country Change: Arturo’s Journey to Becoming a Senior Data Engineer at Devoteam G Cloud https://www.devoteam.com/people/arturos-journey-to-becoming-a-senior-data-engineer/ Sat, 25 Feb 2023 10:23:38 +0000 https://www.devoteam.com/?post_type=people&p=21018 In this series, we’ll put the spotlight on Devoteam G Cloud’s experts who are always at the forefront of driving progress in the exciting and rapidly evolving Google Cloud world. In this article, we delve into Arturo’s journey as a Senior Data engineer in Belgium and the challenges he faces in his role.

Meet Arturo, a talented senior data engineer at Devoteam G Cloud.

Arturo

Graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2016 in Venezuela, Arturo started his journey as a software engineer. But when a job opportunity presented itself at Devoteam G Cloud in Belgium, Arturo seized the chance to expand his career and take on a new challenge.

A Journey from Venezuela to Belgium as a Data Engineer

Arturo’s journey as a data engineer is a story of determination and a love for data engineering. “After graduation in Venezuela, I moved to the Dominican Republic where I worked for 4 years before making the move to Brussels in search of new opportunities. I was looking to expand my career and take on new challenges.

I stumbled upon a Devoteam G Cloud’s job posting on a job board and decided to apply. I was pleasantly surprised by the interview process. Despite the added challenge of a virtual interview due to timezone differences, I was still enthusiastic about the role.

His story explained in a short video

In this video, you’ll get a glimpse into Arturo’s professional journey, his role at Devoteam G Cloud, and the exciting projects he’s been a part of.

Belgium Bound: Arturo Joins the Data Tribe

Integrating into a social circle or finding a community can be challenging when you’re new to a place, but that was not the case for me in Belgium. I was able to easily connect with people and felt welcomed right away within the G Cloud Team.

In comparison, migrating to a new place and working in a new company can be difficult and sometimes it can take time to fully integrate. However, I haven’t had that experience in Belgium. I’ve never felt like an outsider. On the contrary, G Clouders are just fun and friendly. It’s a warm and welcoming group that solves problems in a collaborative way. The team doesn’t limit itself to just our own tribe and we get to learn a lot from one another.

Overall, it’s a great atmosphere to be in, and I’m grateful to be part of such a dynamic and collaborative team.

What does it mean to be a senior data engineer?

As a senior Data Engineer, my main responsibility is to ensure that the project runs smoothly and that I keep everyone informed. My role goes beyond just completing my tasks and monitoring the Jira board. I have a high level of autonomy and the key to success in this role is to keep everything moving forward.

The best thing about the job?

The opportunities for continuous learning and growth are unmatched. I also value the dynamic and collaborative environment. As a team, we not only absorb information but actively contribute to each other’s growth through the sharing of our experiences and discussing project difficulties. This not only fosters a sense of community but also ensures that stagnation is never an option.

What challenges have you faced in your role as a senior data engineer at Devoteam G Cloud?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing speed with quality. Our projects often require us to improve existing processes while ensuring that they are delivered quickly. This is the case on the RBFA project I’m working on, where I had to learn at the start how to navigate the architecture and make necessary fixes. Devoteam G Cloud has been working on the RBFA project for a long time, and of course, you can’t expect to know everything when you join the project as a consultant.

One of the ways we tackled this challenge was by documenting our work on a Confluence page. With every new feature, came the added challenge of documenting it and making it available to the rest of the team I am proud of the progress we made on this cool project.

Overcoming Challenges and Accumulating Expertise

Every new challenge is an opportunity to grow and accumulate expertise. Instead of just putting out fires, I focus on using cloud tools and following best practices to improve my skills and become a better engineer overall.

A Day in the Life of a Data Engineer: Balancing Planning, Meetings, and Hands-On Development to Drive Solutions

This is how one of my days looks like, even if of course every day is different

  1. Start the day by planning tasks for the day
  2. Attend short meetings to stay aligned and synced with the team
  3. Assign priorities and discuss with customers what needs to be done asap.
  4. Focus on building features for projects such as:
  • Building a feature store for Vertex AI
  • Debugging and fixing bugs in RBFA, tracing root cause, opening tickets, and creating reports
  • Creating a data warehouse structure in BigQuery with already architected datasets and tables
  • Giving Looker workshops to customers

Crushing Deadlines & Making Dreams Come True

I joined the Unifiedpost project as my first big challenge. This massive project had very ambitious goals and needed a data mart built in less than a month, which is typically a 6-month project. We leveraged technologies such as Airflow, BigQuery, our self-developed Flycs accelerator, and GKE, as these were used to orchestrate the whole process from ingestion to end product. It was intense, as there were only two of us.

We had to build the data mart quickly by grabbing data from different sources, processing it, and making it available in a data warehouse. And we did it!

Our hard work paid off and we completed the project in just over 4 weeks. The customer was thrilled with the outcome and achieved their goals, thanks to our speedy and effective way of working. It was an unforgettable moment of pride for our team.

Collaboration & fun within the Tribe

The Tribe team is a big, talented, motivated, and fun group of people. We all encourage and facilitate opportunities for learning and knowledge sharing. Whether through regular team meetings, documentation efforts, or simply informal discussions, I believe that continuously learning from each other is a key factor in our success as a team.

Join Arturo’s Tribe in Belgium for an Exciting Career in Data Engineering

From Arturo’s journey at Devoteam G Cloud, it’s clear that a career in data engineering is not just a job, but a ride filled with exciting challenges and endless opportunities to grow and learn. If you’re inspired by Arturo’s story and have a passion for data engineering, why not join our team at Devoteam G Cloud in Belgium?  Don’t miss this opportunity to jumpstart your career in Data Engineering and reach new heights with Google Cloud tech.

Expert in the spotlight: Charlotte, Change Lead, on her nomination as Devoteam G Cloud’s BE Young ICT Lady of the Year 2023 candidate. https://www.devoteam.com/people/young-ict-lady-of-the-year-2023/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 15:40:11 +0000 https://www.devoteam.com/?post_type=people&p=20842 In this series, we’ll put the spotlight on Devoteam G Cloud’s experts who are always at the forefront of driving progress in the exciting and rapidly evolving Google Cloud world. In this article, you’ll meet Charlotte, Change Lead at Devoteam G Cloud Belgium. She has been nominated for Young ICT Lady of the Year 2023 and is among the last 10 selected ladies. If we had to describe her in one word, we would go for fearless! She always sets her teeth in new situations and challenges. But she is so much more than one word. Get to know her, find out what brought her to the ICT world, and get answers to plenty of other pressing questions about this amazing lady.

Can you introduce yourself?

Charlotte Pletinckx

Hi, I’m Charlotte, currently working at Devoteam G Cloud as a Change Lead. My role is to spark the people’s side of change and drive adoption among businesses that are going through small or major changes. What drives me and makes me happy is when a user is impacted by the change. Remarks like: “This training was worth it” or “I love these new tools”, really make my day.

About the nomination for Young ICT Lady of the Year 2023, I feel very honoured to be selected and to end up in the top 10 candidates. We ran an election within Devoteam G Cloud to choose our internal Young ICT Lady of the Year candidate, and I received the most votes from my colleagues. Being chosen by my colleagues is one of the best feelings ever, even though I’m not at ease with being in the spotlight. I may not like being in the spotlight, but I like adventure. Whether it’s delivering a complex IT project, hiking through glaciers in Greenland, or climbing in the mountains of Patagonia.’

My background and how I ended up in IT.

I just happen to be a woman in IT, with no background in IT at all. I studied public relations and languages. Since a very young age, I was fascinated by everything tech. We got our first computer at home in 1992, when I was two years old. One thing led to another. I found floppy disks with games, and my “gaming career” began. After my studies, I started at a telecom company where I was assigned to Big Data and IOT projects. Later I worked as one of the project managers on developing a new mobile application in the banking sector. And before I knew it, I worked at Devoteam G Cloud where I became a Change Manager.

Best professional advice I’ve ever received.

You’re capable of much more than you think! It’s not just advice I got from several different people, it’s a sentence I live by. If people believe in me then why wouldn’t I believe in myself? This encouragement helps me to take on more complex projects and to see them as a challenge. I can give it a try and it’s going to work, or maybe not and that’s also fine.

What advice would you give to younger women just entering the workforce today?

Just dare and take the risk. As a young person, what do you have to lose? There are still so many experiences and opportunities ahead of you. The company that’s hiring you will teach you the necessary skills to perform on the job. Also, you can teach yourself. You can learn anything. I’m living proof of that.

How do we make sure more women choose an IT career path?

In my opinion, it is important to immerse girls in STEM from an early age just like boys. We need to motivate and encourage children in the same way, no matter who they are. Challenge girls to make their voices heard in this society. Girls do not have to do only delicate or caring work, those days are behind us. Education and parenting have an important role to play here.

What challenges would you like to take on yourself in the future?

I see myself taking on more of a mentoring role in the future. Helping people grow in their roles, inspiring them, and transferring knowledge is great. But I don’t see myself just behind a desk. It is a dream of mine to take a trip with my brother on his sailboat and cross the Drake Passage to Antarctica. Hopefully, I will be on that sailboat within five years.

Ready to come set the pace with us?

At Devoteam G Cloud there are infinite possibilities to move as a team and improve as an individual. Find your next challenge today

Discover Megan’s story: A 25-Year journey as a woman in tech https://www.devoteam.com/people/megan-woman-in-tech/ Tue, 31 Jan 2023 16:13:18 +0000 https://www.devoteam.com/?post_type=people&p=20176 Explore Megan’s captivating 25-year career as a principal consultant in IT at Devoteam. Learn about her triumph over challenges she faced and gain inspiration to pursue your own IT career with passion.

Can you tell us about your first job experience?

My first job was 25 years ago, at a Microsoft development Help Desk in South Africa where I worked as a customer support representative. I used to receive a lot of technical questions from customers and I would often reply that I’ll call them back. The truth is, I didn’t have the answers at that time, but I had to do a lot of research and learned a lot about Microsoft development in a short time.

How has your career progressed since then?

Now, I’m a principal consultant at Devoteam where I handle customer support and technical work, mainly with CRM and Power Platform.

What is it like working as a woman in tech?

It has never been a problem for me. I believe in treating everyone the same, regardless of gender. Women have their own unique strengths and abilities, which I refer to as a “super power.”

Also, I’m involved in a charity event every year, where a group of 15 women run 140 km in three days and collect money for every kilometer. This experience taught me how women can support each other in a special way.

What advice do you have for those interested in pursuing a career in the IT industry?

The IT world can be intimidating, but I think being brave and jumping in is key to success. If you have a passion for a particular field, don’t feel like you have to fit into a particular mold. The IT industry is constantly evolving, so you can invent a new role and showcase your skills.

Unlock your potential in the IT world with Devoteam

At Devoteam, you will work with a team of experts in a supportive and inclusive environment, where everyone is treated the same regardless of gender.

Expert in the spotlight: Maria, Head of PMO, about the Importance of Lifelong Learning and Network Building in a Technology Career https://www.devoteam.com/people/importance-of-lifelong-learning-and-network-building-in-a-technology-career/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 16:51:40 +0000 https://www.devoteam.com/?post_type=people&p=20085 In this series, we’ll put the spotlight on Devoteam G Cloud’s experts who are always at the forefront of driving progress in the exciting and rapidly-evolving Google Cloud world. In this article you’ll meet Maria, Head of PMO at Devoteam G Cloud in the Netherlands. She talks about why women should definitely pursue a career in tech!

What position do you hold?

I’m working as the head of PMO, the Project Management Office at Devoteam G Cloud Netherlands. In my job, I’m responsible for the delivery phase of our customers’ projects. The projects mostly focus on building Infrastructure foundations on Google Cloud or on data & analytics projects that use Google Cloud technology like BigQuery and Looker.

In my position, I ensure that every project is delivered to our customers with a positive experience. This includes coordinating efforts between both the customer and our team by understanding their project goals and objectives and working towards achieving those goals.

From Project Coordinator to Head of PMO

I started my career at IBM as a project coordinator within the global infrastructure department and that was my first contact with the tech environment. It was a good path to discover my passion for planning, managing, organizing and achieving goals. It was also then that I noticed that my tech colleagues recognised my skills in these areas, and found it important to get guided on the progress of their projects. Once I got my first experience, I had success in leading large-scale projects, such as constructing a virtual data centre and leading migration projects which provided me again with additional valuable knowledge about IT infrastructure, networking and security.

After a while, I transitioned to the consulting side of the business, specifically working with cloud/digital-native companies. I found consulting to be the most fulfilling role for me as it allows me to apply my knowledge and put it to work for the specific needs of each customer and project.

I joined Devoteam G Cloud, which provided me with opportunities for learning and growth. I was placed on a fast-track learning path, including the ability to become certified as a Google Cloud Digital Leader. It resulted in my recently received promotion to the Head of PMO.

Lifelong learning & the consulting experience make this the best job

I see two aspects of my job that make it the best:

  • Firstly, I learn a lot from the engineers and have found that being open-minded and always prepared to learn is crucial. This approach to “lifelong learning” has been the main point of my professional growth.
  • Secondly, I enjoy the consulting experience here at Devoteam G Cloud because I get the opportunity to work with different clients from various industries. Each day and project is unique, and I learn a lot from my clients and often find new ways to collaborate. Additionally, I appreciate the flexibility that the technology industry provides, we use great Digital Workplace tools like Google Workspace, Jira, Slack, Lucidchart and many other cloud-based tools, which allow me to work remotely and give me the ability to have a more flexible schedule.

Women bring valuable perspectives in a men’s world

Women bring valuable perspectives to the table in the technology industry. We often think and perceive things differently, which leads to a diversity of opinions and problem-solving approaches.

However, it is well-known that women may struggle with networking and self-promoting. This is something I personally have experienced, as there are not as many female colleagues in the industry who can provide support, connections, and opportunities for sharing experiences and learning from one another.

Despite the challenge above, I am really convinced that there are enough brave women who have everything it takes to pursue a career in IT.

How do you think it can be ensured that more women choose a career in tech?

Education at an early age is important, especially for girls, as societal expectations and unconscious bias may limit their potential and aspirations. We must work to eliminate these biases and support girls in pursuing their own interests and learning paths, including the field of informatics. It’s important to recognize that unconscious bias exists and affects our perceptions and decision-making. We must actively work to become aware of our own biases and how they impact our actions in order to make conscious and inclusive decisions.
Secondly, creating a positive and inclusive environment for women in the technology industry is crucial. This includes providing opportunities for women to reach senior positions, as well as having more female role models to serve as inspiration and proof that barriers to success can be overcome.

In my experience working at Devoteam G Cloud, I have not felt this bias or limitations. The company values diversity of thought and encourages individuals to share their unique perspectives and ideas. This is why I am currently in my current position as a female PMO expert, and I am able to bring my unique perspective to the table without feeling constrained.

3 tips to women considering a career in tech

  1. Don’t be afraid to recommend a career in technology to anyone who is considering it, especially when they are female. Every woman can rest reassured: the tech industry brings a lot of advantages such as learning opportunities, but definitely also flexibility and a good work-life balance. At Devoteam G Cloud we’re all offered the freedom to decide when and where we work.
  2. Additionally, it’s important to continuously improve both hard and soft skills through lifelong learning. My constant pursuit of knowledge and staying up to date with the latest advancements in technology has been the driving force behind my success. I have gained multiple certifications in areas such as agile methodologies and obtained certifications from multiple leading cloud providers like Google Cloud. Having an understanding of how the cloud works has played a vital role in my professional growth in this field.
  3. Lastly, I recommend to actively build a professional network. Establishing connections with individuals who are already in the field can provide valuable mentorship and role models to look up to. Over time, they even may open doors to new exciting opportunities in your career!

We strive for more women in tech. Are you ready for the challenge?
